Old-town courtyard haveli

A converted merchant house of eight to twelve rooms, inside the old town and within walking distance of the palace.

Properties of this type are family houses that have been converted a room at a time, which is both the appeal and the catch. The courtyard, the stone stairs and the roof terrace are the original building; the plumbing and the air conditioning are not, and standards vary from house to house.

What is consistent is the location. You step out of the door into the old town rather than into a car park, and the lake steps and the palace entrance are a walk rather than a journey. Breakfast is usually served on the roof.

We quote a specific house once we know your dates, how many rooms you need and whether stairs are a problem — in a building like this they usually are.

What stands out

  • Inside the pedestrian old town, so you are not dependent on a rickshaw for every outing.
  • Roof terraces usually face the lake and the palace.
  • Small enough that the staff know which room you are in by the second morning.

More about Udaipur

Udaipur is a city built around water, and the practical consequence for a traveller is that almost nothing is far from anything else. The old town sits in a tight grid of lanes between the lake and the palace, and most of what people come to see is within a twenty-minute walk of it.

That compactness is why we tend to suggest two nights here rather than one. A single night means arriving, seeing the palace and leaving; two gives you an evening on the water and a morning in the lanes before the heat builds.

Stays divide fairly cleanly into three kinds: converted courtyard houses in the old town, mid-size hotels on the roads leading out of it, and resort properties on the far shore. Which one suits depends almost entirely on whether you want to walk out of your door into the city or away from it.
